I filmed and photographed this historic event for over 6 months, every single day, from the start, right up to the chicks fledging. This documentary is the story of the first White Tailed Sea Eagles to have bred in Ireland in over 100 years. IRELAND’s FIRST is the epic story of the first pair of white tailed sea eagles to have successfully bred in Ireland for over one hundred years.
After last years nest failure, when I began to document this fantastic story, I returned to Mountshannon in mid-February for this exciting and historic event. Initially, I came down to film their mating displays — where the eagles fly high into the sky and then clasp talons while
cartwheeling to the ground. It’s a spectacular event to watch.
I filmed, photographed and documented every day for more than six months. I’ve captured them building the nest, mating, fishing and many more things besides. This story is a huge insight to these magnificent birds. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed every moment, but there have been some serious ups and downs. This book will help you see what these birds have had to endure to make it the success story it is.
I’m amazed at the photos I’ve managed to get. Thanks to everyone involved in this project and especially to Gus Moore ( http://www.Oraleye.com ) for being so passionate about taking me out on the lake in his fantastic cruiser, where I got most of my best shots. I would also like to say a big thank you to Angus Levie ( http://www.shannoncruisers.com/ ) for taking me out every morning at 6am for weeks, enabling me to capture some amazing photos, including the cover page.

Homage to Irelands First
I arrived in Mountshannon in February 2013, to see if the White Tailed Sea Eagles were still there, to my surprise it wasn’t long before I saw them.
These magnificent eagles brought so much to me and everyone that saw them, flying around, especially if they witnessed them catching fish.
Even on a grey, cold and wet day. A smile of joy would come across my face and the weather didn’t matter anymore.
I met hundreds of onlookers, all wanting that glimpse, certain people stayed for hours, some were extremely lucky and saw them within minutes of their arrival at the harbour, but no matter how long people waited, as soon as they saw them, I could see the same joy on their faces.
Each day I would set up my camera, hoping to capture those special moments in time, I was very fortunate to have photographed these eagles on many occasions and there’s not a day to by without one of those moments coming to mind.
Each day I would log the events, which would also make me smile, reliving the day’s events and knowing that those moments would last forever embedded in my mind. A year later and I still smile remembering each click of my camera.
April 28th, a tiny ball of fluff, to a full grown juvenile, he took flight on his maiden voyage in late July 2013, an amazing success story had risen from a pile of sticks, intertwined in a tree on Bushy Island, County Clare, for the first time in Ireland for over 100 Years and unknowing to him, he made the history books.
Since the chicks left the nest, Allan Mee, Tom, Maura, Declan, Conor, just a few names of people that email me to let me know about any sightings, which again makes me smile and brings joy to my day.
An email arrived early march 2014, asking me if I’d heard anything of a chick being shot, I really didn’t want to believe, but the rumour became reality, one of those two chicks had been shot, some 50 gunshot pellets were found in his body, this magnificent eagle sustained a broke wing and a broken leg, unable to fend for himself and find food, he starved to death.
An absolutely tragic ending to such a wonderful and momentous occasion !
